Today, it’s hard to imagine Mark Strong with a full head of hair. His smooth, bald look has become a defining part of his style, adding to his unique charm. But there was a time when the actor did have hair. Voice set out to find out when Strong began losing his hair and what he looked like back then.

In a 2009 interview with The Telegraph, Strong shared that his hair started thinning around the age of 25—a difficult experience for any young man, making him feel self-conscious and a bit down.

Initially, his hair loss wasn’t very noticeable. For instance, in 1990, at the age of 27, Strong appeared as Constable Gibb in the BBC series The Bill, where he still had a decent amount of hair.

But not long after that, his hairline began receding more visibly. In 1991, when Strong took on the role of a Nazi in Larry Elikann’s Against the Wind, he was often seen wearing a cap—likely to match the character’s look, but also possibly as a subtle way to hide the hair loss.

Even after he went completely bald, Strong didn’t confine himself to roles that required a shaven head. With the help of wigs, he continued to take on various characters. In 1996, he played Mr. Knightley in a TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, showing that his versatility as an actor was never limited by his hairstyle—or lack thereof.
