Even the most dedicated Marilyn Monroe fans didn’t know she had a long-lost sister until she revealed this surprising detail in the 1990s. Now, we get to see the blonde icon in a completely new light.
In 1926, 24-year-old Gladys Baker gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Although Gladys named her daughter Norma Jean Mortensen, the world would come to know her as Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn’s childhood was far from easy. Despite her love for her mother, Gladys struggled as a guardian and didn’t disclose the identity of Marilyn’s biological father. This led to young Norma Jean being placed in foster care.
Gladys spent six years isolated from the outside world in a mental health facility, reflecting on her past and her children. Shockingly, Marilyn had no idea that she wasn’t Gladys’ only child. Six years before Marilyn was born, Gladys had another daughter from her first marriage to Jasper. This child, named Berniece Baker Miracle, was also joined by an older brother, Jackie. Sadly, all of Gladys’ children, even the ones she didn’t raise, faced challenging upbringings. Berniece’s father remarried when she was very young, leaving little time for her and her brother. As a result, Berniece grew up feeling distant from her father and stepmother.
Though Berniece found some comfort in her brother’s presence, tragedy struck when Jackie passed away at just fourteen. Berniece felt abandoned and alone in the years that followed. It’s no wonder that, after years of hardships and losses, the discovery of each other’s existence became a source of comfort for both sisters. As time passed, they formed a deep bond, and Berniece took on a protective role for her younger sister, who was living with their mother’s friend.
Unfortunately, Marilyn’s life with Grace Goddard, her guardian, was far from stable. Determined to help, Berniece made calls to relatives to find a better home for Marilyn and even tried to get Gladys released from the mental health institution. But despite her best efforts, things didn’t work out as planned.
