Born as Sofia Scicolone at the Clinicia Regina Margherita in Rome on September 20, 1934, she came into the family where the man refused to marry her mother despite the fact she gave birth to his 2 children. She had a sister named Maria and they were raised in the slums of Pozzuoli during the period of the second World War. The girl was only 14 when she first participated in a beauty contest and occupied the first place.
Then, she stole the heart of film producer C. Ponti who eventually became her husband. Soon, she found her calling in acting and started to appear as an extra in a number of movies. People gave her the nickname Sofia Lazzaro as she could make even Lazzarus come back to life due to her unearthly beauty and unparalleled femininity. Among her most notorious roles are in «La favorita», «Two Women» and «Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow» that catapulted her into global fame and recognition.
In 1991 she was dubbed as one of the world cinema’s greatest treasures. Over the time her appearance on the big screen came few and far between. Loren fully focused on her family life and the upbringing of her two sons who came into her life as nothing but blessing since the legendary actress had had 2 miscarriages and was told that she would never carry a child on her own.
