Although Kate Winslet has come to terms with the huge fame Titanic brought her, she still remembers how tough the years after its release were.

“I felt like I needed to look a certain way or present myself in a specific image. With all the media pressure at that time, my life became pretty miserable,” the actress shared in a recent interview with Porter Magazine.

“Journalists used to say, ‘After Titanic, you could have done anything, but you chose small films,’” Kate recalled. “And I’d respond, ‘Yes, of course I did! Because, guess what, being famous was awful.’”

It took her many years, and even decades, to build the career she truly wanted after starring in James Cameron’s hit movie at just 22 years old.

Now 48, Kate Winslet chooses roles that suit her best, often leaning towards independent films. However, she hasn’t completely stepped away from major productions, as she recently rejoined James Cameron for the Avatar series.

Despite all the difficulties, the actress sees a silver lining in the experience: at 22, Titanic gave her the financial freedom to get her own apartment. “And that’s no small thing,” she added.
