In the 1980s, fur hats were all the rage, and nearly everyone had one. But over time, practicality took over, and people started opting for knitted hats instead. Today, fur hats are hardly ever worn.
I had a mink hat sitting in my closet for years, and one day, my husband tried wearing it while working outside, but he quickly stopped. It was clear that no one was going to wear it again. He suggested giving it to the dog for its kennel, but I couldn’t bring myself to throw away a mink hat. This gave me an idea.
I decided to repurpose the old hat into something useful. I began by cutting along the seams and removing the fur. Surprisingly, there wasn’t much fur, and it wasn’t as fluffy as I expected.
After that, I soaked the fur in warm water with laundry detergent. After a few washes, it became clean, and I rinsed it in conditioner. I lightly squeezed out the water and left it to dry.
Once the fur dried, I used a hairdryer to fluff it up, combing it until it became soft, shiny, and smelled fresh.
I then had an idea to turn the fur into a decorative piece for a handbag. I cut a 7 cm circle from paper, traced it onto the leather, and carefully cut it out with a utility knife.
Next, I stitched around the edge, pulled it tight, and filled the shape with padding to create little pom-poms. These would make a great decoration for a bag.
For the bag itself, I used an old wool sweater. To make the fabric sturdier, I added non-woven fabric. I attached the zipper to the sweater fabric and then to the lining.
I joined the two fabrics together, leaving a small hole to turn it inside out.
Once I stitched the corners, I added a strap with a chain.
After turning the bag inside out, I sewed on the fur pom-poms by hand. The bag turned out beautifully.
No one would ever guess that it was once an old fur hat.
Now, with this stylish new bag, I can confidently carry it to any party!
