In the bustling city of Hangzhou, China, there is a massive residential complex called Regent International. It’s not just a building—it’s like an entire city under one roof. Around 20,000 people live here, which is the size of a small town. The complex has 36 to 39 floors and can accommodate up to 30,000 residents.

This place is designed so that people hardly need to step outside. There are living spaces, shops, and entertainment areas all within the complex.

Initially, the building was planned as a luxury hotel, but as demand shifted, it was converted into apartments.

Large duplex units were divided into smaller apartments to maximize space. For instance, a 90-square-meter apartment could be turned into six separate rooms, making it more profitable for landlords.

This setup worked well for property owners, as it helped them recoup their investment faster.

Most of the residents here are young professionals, students, or aspiring entrepreneurs. The location is central, making it ideal for those who need affordable housing in an otherwise expensive area.

The cheapest units cost between $160 and $220 per month. These tiny apartments don’t have windows, but they come with basic necessities like a bathroom, a small kitchenette, and a sleeping area.

Larger apartments with balconies are significantly more expensive, ranging from $500 to $600 per month.

Many people living in the complex upgrade their apartments as they advance in their careers. They move into bigger spaces within the same building before eventually transitioning to a more traditional apartment elsewhere.

Here’s an example of a duplex apartment in the building:

What do you think about living in a place like this? Could you see yourself in a similar setup?
