I noticed water was slowly running into the toilet all the time 😡🫢 At first, I ignored it, but then I realized it was wasting water and getting on my nerves 😠😤 I opened the tank, checked everything, and found a quick way to stop the leak in just a few minutes 🚽💪 I’m showing exactly what I did in the article below 👇
Of course, this can hardly be called a serious problem, but many people come across it. I’ll try to explain how to deal with it in a simple way, without any complicated terms.
I’ll explain everything clearly and step by step, so that even someone who has never dealt with plumbing can figure it out. Men might find it useful too—feel free to send this to your wife and get back to your own work.
The first thing to do is turn off the water supply to the toilet tank. The valve is usually in the most awkward spot, somewhere you rarely look.
Next, unscrew the flush button. Turn it to the left (counterclockwise), then set it aside.
Carefully lift the lid off the cistern. You’ll see the inside parts of the toilet system. Everything in mine is new, so I can’t show the usual “surprises” that older plumbing often has. But don’t worry if yours looks a bit dirty or worn—that’s normal.
On the left side is the drain mechanism (this lets water out), and on the right is the filling valve (this lets water in). You don’t need to know every detail about how they work—just the basics will be enough to fix the issue.
There are two common reasons why water keeps running:
First reason:
The filling valve can stop working properly, and water doesn’t shut off. Often, the float, which should rise and block the water, gets water inside it and stops floating like it should.
Take out the float, shake out the water, and put it back in place. Sometimes, the float gets stuck, so check if it’s moving freely.
If, after this, the water stops running when the tank is full, you’ve solved the problem. If the water still keeps flowing, move on to the next step.
Second reason (most common):
Take out the drain mechanism. Put your hand inside the tank and gently turn the part to the left. Usually, half a turn is enough.
Take out the whole part and look closely at the rubber seal. This is the part that wears out or gets dirty over time. Lime, rust, and dirt can stop it from sealing properly.
Clean the rubber seal well and check for cracks or damage. Over time, the rubber can dry out, crack, or lose its shape.
If you see that the rubber is damaged, you don’t need to buy a whole new mechanism. Just take the seal off, go to a hardware store, show it to the seller, and buy a replacement.
Also, clean the place where the mechanism was attached, as dirt and buildup often collect there too.
After you’ve done all this, the water in your toilet should work properly again.
