Archaeologists have revealed ancient rock paintings deep within Colombia’s Amazon rainforest. According to experts, these drawings are more than 12,000 years old. Scientists have referred to this discovery as the “Sistine Chapel of the Ancients” and believe that it might take hundreds of years to fully study all the paintings.

The research team consisted of archaeologists from the UK and Colombia. They explored a 12-kilometer stretch of rock, which took them a lot of time.

During the research, they found tens of thousands of rock drawings. Among them were images of animals, birds, plants, and people. Scientists also identified extinct species, including ancient relatives of elephants that lived in America over 10,000 years ago. It was the images of these extinct animals that helped determine the approximate age of the drawings.

Some of the ancient paintings were found in hard-to-reach areas, high above the ground. To examine them, researchers had to use drones.

Surprisingly, this discovery took place last year, but remained secret for quite some time. The reason for the secrecy was that the team of archaeologists was exploring the Amazon as part of a project for the documentary series “Jungle Mysteries: The Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon.”

They decided to share this incredible find with the public only shortly before the documentary’s release.
