Back in 1987, a young Swiss woman named Corinne Hofmann traveled to Kenya with her fiancé, Marco. They had long dreamed of going on safari. But instead of simply enjoying the trip together, Corinne’s life took an unexpected turn.

At a tribal fire gathering among the Samburu — relatives of the Maasai — she noticed a tall warrior with a proud posture and skin the color of red clay. His name was Lketinga Leparmoryo. One look was enough. Corinne fell in love and soon left her fiancé behind for this man from another world.

Romance, however, quickly turned into reality. Being with a tribesman who lived strictly by ancestral traditions was nothing like she had imagined. Lketinga was stern and direct. Whenever she complained about the heat, the flies, or the strange customs, he would simply say: “If you don’t like it, go back to Marco.”

Still, Corinne was determined. She sold her business in Switzerland, gave up her comfortable life, and settled in a Kenyan village. There, she opened a small shop, slowly integrated into the community, and eventually even gained citizenship.

Her daily life was transformed: a thatched hut instead of a house, kerosene lamps instead of electricity, cold water for washing, and none of the comforts she once took for granted. Yet she adapted.

Everything changed again when their daughter, Napirai, was born. Instead of joy, jealousy took over Lketinga. He doubted the child was his and grew suspicious of every man who came near her shop. His temper and mistrust became unbearable.

By 1990, only two years later, Corinne had reached her limit. She fled back to Europe with her daughter, seeking safety and stability far away from jealousy and violence.

Fifteen years passed. In 2005, while working on a film based on her book, Corinne returned to Kenya. She saw Lketinga again — older, calmer, and no longer holding onto the past. He had married three times since and built a life of his own.
