In September 1994, while filming the second season of The X-Files, Gillian Anderson welcomed her first daughter, Piper Maru. The name held a special meaning for the family, and just months later, an episode with the same title appeared in the series. Piper’s earliest days were far from ordinary — the first nine months of her life were spent on set, inside a trailer, surrounded by cameras, props, and studio lights.

Despite raising a child in such an unusual environment, Gillian was determined to give her daughter a life away from the spotlight. Television wasn’t a part of their home, and Piper grew up not even realizing her mother was famous until she turned eleven. Gillian and production designer Clyde Klotz ended their marriage in 1997, when Piper was three. From that point on, Gillian raised her alone, with strict routines that included set bedtimes, careful nutrition, and a ban on TV and video games.

As she grew older, Piper’s life remained far removed from Hollywood. Her only brief screen appearance was in the film The House of Mirth in 2000, but she never pursued acting further. In 2002, she and her mother relocated to London, where Piper attended schools with a strong focus on the arts. She became increasingly drawn to painting and design, interests that reflected her father’s creative background. Later, she studied theater design at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, gaining experience in stagecraft and scenography.

Her career eventually led her back to where it all began. When The X-Files returned in 2016, Piper joined the art department, contributing to set design and props. She returned again in 2018 for another season, finding herself on the very set where she had spent her infancy — but now as a professional. Beyond that, she built a career in theater, film, and television design, even working on an animated short. In 2022, she launched her own studio, Maru Objects, focusing on handmade artistic creations, games, and home décor.

While Piper has found success in her field, she keeps her personal life private. Since 2017, she has been in a relationship with freerider and environmental activist Ed Salisbury. The couple occasionally appears at events together, but mostly stays out of the public eye. On rare occasions, she accompanies her mother to red carpet events, where their resemblance draws attention. Still, Piper has built her own identity as a designer and artist, proving that even when born into fame, it’s possible to carve out an independent path.
