For the premiere of School Bus at the Toronto International Film Festival, Matthew McConaughey was joined on the red carpet by his wife Camila Alves, his 93-year-old mother Mary Kathleen McCabe, and his teenage son Levi, 17.

The event was especially meaningful for McConaughey’s family. Both his mother and his son made their acting debuts in School Bus, directed by Paul Greengrass and produced by Jamie Lee Curtis.

During the press conference after the screening, McConaughey proudly brought Levi on stage and shared the story of how his son got the role. “I had no idea this young man was interested in acting,” he said. “As I usually do before starting a new project, I showed my family the script. Levi asked me, ‘Your character has a son — how old is he?’ I told him they were about the same age. Then he suddenly said, ‘Do you think I could play him?’ At first, I didn’t answer. Just wanting it wasn’t enough for me to say ‘maybe.’”

McConaughey explained that Levi returned to him with the same question several more times. Only when he saw his son seriously working on the role did he decide to help. “I grabbed a camera, ran through a scene with him, and sent the video to casting director Francine. She replied, ‘I think this is good enough to show the director.’”

The proud father smiled as he watched Levi take his first steps into acting in front of a global audience.
