Recently I came across a strange old metal object that immediately caught my attention. At first glance, it looked like some kind of small tongs, so my first thought was that it might be an antique tool for picking up sugar cubes.
But the design seemed a bit unusual, so I decided to find out what it actually was.

To my surprise, the object had nothing to do with food at all. It was once used as a clever accessory for women’s clothing.
The small clamp was designed to hold up the hem or train of a long dress. In times when dresses often had long skirts that dragged on the ground, this tool helped keep the fabric from getting dirty while walking.

The hem of the dress would be clipped into the device, and a cord attached to it would be fastened to the belt. By adjusting the cord, the skirt could be lifted slightly off the ground.

What looks like a mysterious metal tool today was once a practical everyday accessory used with long dresses.
Nowadays, items like this are mostly seen only in museums or old fashion illustrations, leaving many people wondering what they were originally used for.
