Kim Kardashian has revealed a frightening new health problem that immediately brought back painful memories for her family. The 45-year-old reality star was diagnosed with esophagitis, an inflammation of the lining of the esophagus, after undergoing medical examinations.
Footage of Kim in the hospital appears in the official trailer for Season 8 of “The Kardashians.” Looking exhausted after undergoing procedures, she is seen lying in a hospital bed while discussing what doctors discovered.
The diagnosis takes on an especially emotional meaning for the Kardashian family because of what happened to Kim’s father, Robert Kardashian Sr. He died in 2003 at the age of 59, only weeks after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
However, the two diagnoses should not be confused: Kim has been diagnosed with esophagitis, an inflammatory condition, while her father had cancer of the esophagus.
That distinction doesn’t stop the subject from triggering a deeply emotional reaction in the family. In the trailer, a voice raises the connection to her father’s illness before the camera cuts to Kris Jenner, who is visibly overwhelmed and in tears.
Esophageal health has remained deeply personal to the Kardashian sisters for years. In 2019, they helped establish the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health at the University of California in their father’s memory, with a focus that includes diagnosis, treatment and research involving esophageal conditions.

For Kim and her family, the hospital visit therefore touched a particularly painful nerve. And judging by the emotional footage already released, her diagnosis is set to become one of the most serious personal storylines of the new season.
