In the northeast of Florida, covering an area of 220 square kilometers, is the Nokuse Wildlife Preserve. This large natural area is the biggest of its kind in the southeastern part of the United States. It exists thanks to the efforts of businessman Marion Clifton Davis and his wife, Stella.
The couple generously invested about 90 million dollars to help restore and protect the unique landscape of Florida. Today, Nokuse is a vibrant place, home to millions of plants and many types of animals.
Davis’s path to becoming a conservationist began in the year 2000, quite by chance. On a rainy day, stuck in traffic, he noticed a tent with a sign about a presentation on black bears. On a whim, he left his car to join the event.
Inside, schoolchildren were learning about the local environment. The speaker talked about how nature was being slowly destroyed and why conservation was so important. This simple talk deeply affected Davis. It sparked a strong interest in him, changing how he saw the world, and leading him to focus on helping the environment. His wife, Stella, quickly got involved too.
Together, they bought land that had been used by logging companies and started a major reforestation project. In the 1930s, the swamp pine forests had been wiped out by logging, leaving the area empty.
However, Davis’s team of ecologists managed to bring the swamp pine trees back. Now, the Nokuse Preserve is full of life. Many animals, like eagles, bobcats, foxes, raccoons, and armadillos, live there. The name “Nokuse” comes from a Native American language, meaning “black bear.”
Davis made sure that even after his lifetime, the project would continue to grow and succeed. He left funds to support the preserve and set up a center for environmental education. Nokuse Wildlife Preserve is a tribute to his vision and shows how one person can make a difference in saving our natural world.
