Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry are often included in lists of surprising celebrity couples that many people didn’t know about.

While it may seem hard to imagine now, back in the 1990s, many thought Julia Roberts and the Friends star were a perfect match.

For years, fans were left wondering why the couple broke up—until Matthew Perry recently revealed the reason in an interview with The Times.

According to Matthew, he was the one who ended the relationship. It all started in 1995 when the Pretty Woman star was offered a role in one of the Friends episodes.

Roberts agreed to the role but had one condition: her character had to be involved with Perry’s character.

The show’s producers informed Matthew of her request, and in response, he sent her a bouquet of red roses with a note that said, “The only thing more exciting than you being on the show is that I now get to send you flowers.”

At the time, Julia was filming in France, but the distance didn’t stop them from connecting. They quickly started communicating and developed a fax-based romance that lasted for three months.

When Julia returned to Los Angeles, the two reportedly began dating even before she filmed her Friends episode, as Matthew shared in his autobiography.

However, their relationship lasted only two months.

Despite his feelings for her, Matthew decided to end things because of his insecurities.

“Dating Julia Roberts was overwhelming. I was convinced she would leave me. Why wouldn’t she? I felt I wasn’t good-looking or attractive enough. So, I broke up with the stunning and brilliant Julia Roberts before she could leave me,” he explained.
