On December 9, 2024, legendary actor Dick Van Dyke and his wife, Arlene Silver, were compelled to evacuate their Malibu residence due to the swift advance of the Franklin Fire. As the flames drew nearer, Van Dyke recalled the harrowing moment when he battled with a fire hose and came dangerously close to being unable to escape to safety. Fortunately, three neighbors helped him escape, and they later saved his guest house from burning.
The fire, intensified by powerful winds and dry conditions, impacted more than 20,000 Malibu residents, including celebrities such as Mark Hamill and Cher. As the couple made their escape, the moment was recorded on a Ring camera, with Van Dyke expressing his concern over the safety of their pet cat, Bobo, during the evacuation. However, after returning home, the couple was relieved to find Bobo unharmed, thanks to the help of Animal Control.
In an outpouring of support, fans, celebrities, and even the band Coldplay sent their well wishes to the couple. The Franklin Fire brought back painful memories of the 2018 Woolsey Fire, another major disaster for Malibu.
As Van Dyke celebrates his 99th birthday today, fans express gratitude for his safety and the safe return of his beloved pet.
