At First, We Laughed at This ‘Popcorn’ on the Sand—Then We Discovered the Disturbing Truth

It looks like popcorn, but touching it might be a mistake… ☠️😨 We picked it up without a second thought—until a local revealed the unsettling truth 😐🫣 Now, we wish we had never touched it. Uncovered the truth in the article below 👇

We have always enjoyed walking along the coast, exploring new places, and being surrounded by nature. That day, while driving along the shores of Fuerteventura, we decided to take a small, unpaved road that caught our eye.

Ahead, we spotted a beach and thought it would be a nice place to stop, stretch our legs, and take in the view.

But as we got closer, we couldn’t believe our eyes. The entire beach looked as if it had been covered in popcorn!

At first, we thought it might be some kind of art project or even a publicity stunt. It looked too strange to be real. We stared at the ground, puzzled. “Is this actual popcorn? Or just very odd sand?”

Curious, we bent down and picked up a handful of the white pieces. The moment we touched them, we realized they weren’t soft like popcorn at all—they were hard, almost like small stones. But what were they? And how did they end up here?

Even more surprising was the contrast between the bright white pieces and the dark volcanic sand. The combination looked surreal.

Noticing our confusion, a friendly local approached us with a smile. He then shared an incredible story. These strange “popcorn” pieces were actually the remains of red coral algae.

When these algae die, their skeletons turn white. The ocean waves then carry them to shore, where the water and sand slowly shape them into round, popcorn-like pieces.

Hearing this, we looked around in awe. This wasn’t just a beach—it was a rare and beautiful natural wonder.

The mix of white coral “popcorn” and black volcanic rock created a breathtaking and almost otherworldly landscape.
