This story is a clear reminder that envy can sometimes lead to harsh consequences. In England, a woman decided to cut down her neighbor’s sequoia tree without permission. The court later ordered her to pay an enormous sum as compensation. Since she didn’t have the money, she was forced to sell her house.

The story was shared by a Reddit user who lives with his relatives in a house that is shared by three families. There were two sequoia trees growing on their property, and another tree stood on the neighboring plot owned by an elderly couple. After the couple passed away, their daughter Jo moved into the house with her family. From the very beginning, the new neighbors caused a lot of trouble. Her children often created problems, and one day, they left the duck shed open, which led to many of the birds dying. Later, the same thing happened to the chickens.

At one point, a powerful hurricane hit the area, and the sequoia tree on Jo’s property fell. She was upset that she had lost her tree, while the neighbors still had two standing tall. Over time, she grew more irritated by the fact that one of the sequoias on their property cast shade over her land. She started complaining and even threatened to cut the tree down.

When the family returned home after a trip, they were shocked to find that one of their sequoias and two oaks had been cut down. Jo claimed that the hurricane had knocked the trees over, and she had been forced to remove them. She even handed over a bill showing that she had paid eight thousand pounds for the work.

However, there was a camera installed at the back of the yard, which Jo didn’t know about. The footage showed that she had hired workers to cut the trees down while the family was away.

A tree expert later examined the site and revealed that the sequoia was one hundred and sixty years old and a rare species. He also warned that the remaining roots could rot and damage the house’s foundation.

The family took Jo to court. The ruling required her to pay two hundred and fifty thousand pounds for the sequoia, two hundred thousand pounds for the potential damage to the foundation, and fifty thousand pounds for the two oaks. The total compensation amounted to five hundred thousand pounds.

Since Jo did not have that kind of money, she was forced to sell her house.

The family used the compensation to fully pay off their mortgage, carry out partial repairs to their home, and plant a new sequoia tree in place of the old one.
