Renovating your home can be expensive. However, even if you want to save money, you don’t have to settle for the most boring or cheapest options. Some things can be made by hand using affordable materials, and the results can be truly impressive.
At first glance, the floor in this house looks like it’s made of artificial stone. But in reality, the homeowner made it herself using paper!
Here’s what you’ll need:
– A roll of wrapping paper or a stack of brown paper bags
– PVA glue
– Interior wood varnish
– Clear polyurethane paint
– A paint roller
– A bucket
Here’s how it’s done:
This technique works for floors with a base of concrete, plaster, or plywood. Start by removing the old flooring and cleaning the surface thoroughly. Make sure there is no glue left, and take off the baseboards. If the floor has any dents or uneven areas, patch them up. To help the paper stick better, the surface shouldn’t be too smooth, so it’s a good idea to go over it lightly with a sander.
Next, rip the paper into large, irregular pieces and crumple them slightly to give them a more natural stone-like appearance.
If your floor has a concrete base, mix PVA glue and water in equal parts (1:1 ratio). For wooden floors, mix 75% water and 25% glue. Apply this mixture to the floor, place a piece of paper on top, and cover it with more glue.
Keep covering the entire floor with overlapping pieces of paper, ensuring they slightly overlap to account for shrinkage as they dry.
Once the floor is completely covered, let the glue dry well. After that, it’s time to coat the floor with wood varnish. If you like the natural color of the paper, use a clear varnish. Spread it evenly with a paint roller.
The next step is to apply several layers of clear polyurethane paint to make the floor durable and resistant to scratches and damage. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next one.
