Fertilizing raspberries at the right time is very important, especially the first feeding in spring. This is what sets the stage for how well the plants will thrive and yield fruit. After winter, raspberry bushes wake up and need extra nutrients to grow strong shoots and form flower buds.
In this article, I’ll share which fertilizer helps raspberries grow thick stems up to two meters high and ensures a rich harvest.
How to Feed Raspberries in Spring: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Clean Up the Raspberry Patch
Once the snow has melted, start by tidying up the area:
– Rake away last year’s leaves, dry grass, and any debris. It’s best to burn these, as pests might be hiding in them.
– If you bent the shoots down for the winter, carefully straighten them and secure them upright, removing any supports.
Step 2: Fertilize the Raspberries
There are many options for feeding raspberries in the spring, but I like to alternate between different fertilizers to see which works best.
One of my favorites is granulated chicken manure. It’s an eco-friendly, natural fertilizer that’s perfect for spring.
Why Granulated Chicken Manure Is Great for Raspberries:
– It’s rich in nitrogen, which boosts green growth.
– It has phosphorus, which strengthens the roots.
– It contains potassium, which helps berries form and makes the plants more resistant to diseases.
– It improves soil structure and helps it retain moisture, which is vital in dry periods.
How to Apply Chicken Manure Properly:
1. Distribute the granules around the base of the raspberry bushes.
2. Gently incorporate them into the top layer of soil to ensure the nutrients reach the roots quickly.
3. Water the plants thoroughly to help dissolve the granules and release their nutrients.
How to Water Raspberries After Fertilizing:
– Use about 40 liters of water per square meter of raspberry plants.
– Water at the base of the plants, avoiding the leaves and stems.
Making Liquid Fertilizer from Granulated Manure:
If you prefer a liquid option, here’s how to do it:
– Mix 100 grams of granules with 10 liters of water.
– Let it sit for 48 hours.
– Pour 0.5 liters of the solution under each raspberry bush.
After applying the liquid fertilizer, water the raspberries again with clean water to help the nutrients soak into the soil.
Remember: Raspberries need feeding not just in the spring, but throughout the growing season. However, the first feeding in spring is the most important because it gives the plants a good start and helps them produce lots of berries.
