A group of climbers carried out a real rescue mission to save a stray dog. Here’s the story of true sports camaraderie, shared in this article!
A tourist club from Mexico organized a rescue operation with thirty volunteers to save a mixed-breed dog, affectionately named Canelo by the mountaineers. The dog became attached to the climbers when they started their climb to Pico de Orizaba, the highest peak in Mexico, which is an active volcano.
At first, the climbers simply felt sorry for the dog and shared some of their food with him. However, Canelo decided that he had found his new family and began following the athletes. Although he kept his distance, he never left their sight. The climbers grew concerned when the dog continued to follow them, even in the freezing temperatures and snowy weather.
The most surprising part came when the dog reached the summit with the climbers, earning the title of “summit conqueror.” But when the climbers started their descent, Canelo surprised everyone by staying at the top. Despite their efforts to call him down, the dog refused to budge, and the team left, thinking the dog would eventually come down on his own. Unfortunately, since October, the dog was not seen at the bottom.
Other climbers who came after them reported seeing Canelo in the mountains and even tried to feed him, but none could catch him or bring him down.
For about a month, Canelo remained stranded in the mountains, enduring freezing temperatures. His story and photos spread across social media, calling for help. And help arrived quickly in the form of an experienced instructor named Lajo Aguilar and his club members. They somehow managed to bring the dog down, warming and feeding him along the way, before carrying him down in a hiking backpack.
After a visit to the vet, Canelo was placed in an animal shelter. The staff didn’t even need to post his photo on the shelter’s website. Thanks to the widespread attention to his story, many people were eager to adopt Canelo and give him a new home!
