✏️ His family couldn’t afford paper — now his drawings are mistaken for photographs At just 13, Nigerian artist Karim Waris is turning struggle into stunning hyperrealism, one pencil stroke at a time 🎨 You can read his full story in the article below!👇
In Nigeria, Africa’s most populated and one of its poorest countries, lives a talented young artist named Karim Waris Olamilekan. His artwork is incredibly realistic — so much so that many of his black-and-white drawings look like real photographs. We share the story of this gifted teenager, who dreams of becoming as famous as Michelangelo.
Karim was born in a small, poor village. No one in his family had any artistic skills. He started drawing when he was just six years old. At first, he copied cartoon characters, and later began creating portraits of his friends and family members.

When Karim was eight, his family moved to a city. There, he met someone who studied at an art academy and invited Karim to attend an open class. The boy sat quietly in a corner and began sketching a teapot and a pair of headphones along with the adult students. The drawing impressed the teacher so much that just a few days later, Karim was officially accepted into the Iowola Art Academy.

In only three years, Karim’s talent helped him become one of the academy’s top students. Since his family didn’t have much money, he used to secretly save up for paints, pencils, and paper. He would often draw at night, using only a small flashlight to see.

Today, Karim’s artwork is displayed alongside professional artists’ pieces. Critics say he has an unusually deep understanding of life for someone so young — something that clearly shows in his drawings. One of his most powerful pieces is a self-portrait called *“Daily Bread.”* In it, he shows the pain, hard work, and struggle his family goes through just to survive.

Now 13 years old, Karim has chosen to focus on portrait art and is even earning money with his work. His drawings are highly respected by experts. He finds inspiration in the works of Michelangelo and a fellow Nigerian artist, Arinze Stanley, who is known for his detailed portraits.

Karim believes that if he continues to work hard and keep learning, one day his art will hang in galleries next to those of his heroes.
