A Reddit user named PaulyRocket68 shared a surprising discovery he made while renovating an old house he recently moved into with his wife and kids. The home was originally rebuilt in 1925 and had clearly aged, but that didn’t stop the family from falling in love with it.
In his post, Pauly explained, “We really liked the house—it’s beautiful, filled with heavy old furniture, and has a special charm.” The main issue, according to him, was the wallpaper, which looked worn out and unattractive. The family quickly decided to take it down.
But once they started peeling it off, they found something unexpected. Under the wallpaper were layers and layers of paint—at least 11 coats, Pauly counted. That would have been fine, except for one major problem: much of the old paint contained lead, a harmful material that was commonly used in the past before people understood its risks.
Lead in paint can be dangerous, especially if it’s disturbed. When heated or scraped, it can release toxic fumes. Even small bits of paint can end up on children’s hands and be accidentally swallowed. Exposure to lead is known to cause serious health issues, including kidney problems, high blood pressure, and even damage to the brain and nervous system.
Now fully aware of the risks, Pauly is unsure what to do next. He doesn’t want to put his family’s health at risk, so he’s reaching out to professional chemists to figure out if there’s a safe way to remove the lead and make the house safe again.
It’s a reminder that older homes, while full of charm and history, can sometimes hide serious problems beneath the surface.
