George Clooney, 63, recently admitted that he’s not exactly thrilled with his new look — especially the dyed dark hair he’s currently sporting for an upcoming role.

During a visit to the iconic Sardi’s restaurant in New York, where a cartoon portrait of him was being unveiled, Clooney joked about the drawing, which showed him with his usual gray hair. “I like the hair color in the portrait better than what I’ve got now,” he said with a laugh. “This is more me. I’ve had gray hair for a long time now — since my twenties, actually.”

He explained that the darker hair isn’t a personal choice, but something required for a new role. In real life, Clooney says he much prefers keeping things natural.

And he’s not the only one who feels that way — his family isn’t a big fan of the new look either. “It’s just not me. I’ve had gray hair most of my adult life,” he said. “Honestly, my friends and family make fun of me. They say nothing makes you look older than trying to look younger by dyeing your hair at 63.”

Clooney was first seen with the darker hair back in early March, while walking through the Soho neighborhood in New York. It was later revealed that the new hairstyle is part of his transformation for his role in the Broadway musical Good Night and Good Luck, which marks his stage debut. It’s unclear how long he’ll need to keep the dyed look for the production.
