Before his passing at 65, Val Kilmer lived a life as layered and complex as the roles he played. Known for iconic films like Batman Forever and Tombstone, Kilmer spent much of his later life far from Hollywood, finding comfort and peace on a sprawling New Mexico ranch.

Kilmer purchased the Pecos River Ranch in 1991 — a 6,000-acre retreat filled with mountains, forests, and rivers. It became his sanctuary. He renovated the adobe-style home into a soulful reflection of the Southwest, filled with Navajo rugs, antique furniture, and global artifacts. He once said, “Words can’t capture the beauty and strength of this land.”

But after the 2008 financial crisis and ongoing health battles, Kilmer was forced to sell most of the ranch. He relocated to Malibu and eventually moved into a guesthouse owned by his longtime friend Cher. She cared for him through his cancer diagnosis and recovery, even calling 911 the night he began vomiting blood.

Kilmer survived throat cancer, though his voice was permanently affected. Through it all, he credited his faith in Christian Science for helping him persevere. He continued to connect with fans through social media — his final post, simply captioned “u r enuff,” received a flood of love from admirers around the world.
