Actor Neil McDonough, known for his roles in “Desperate Housewives,” “Suits,” “Yellowstone,” and “American Horror Story,” recently opened up about how his personal values nearly ended his career in Hollywood.

During an appearance on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, the 58-year-old revealed that he went two years without work because he refused to do romantic scenes involving kissing. He explained that this decision was rooted in his personal beliefs and deep respect for his wife, model Ruve Robertson, whom he married in 2003. Together, they raise five children.
“I’ve always had a clause in my contracts that I won’t kiss other women on screen,” McDonough said. “My wife never asked me to — it was entirely my decision. I just didn’t feel comfortable doing it.”

But in Hollywood, this stance didn’t sit well. McDonough shared that his acting career took a sudden nosedive. “For two years, I couldn’t land a single role. I lost everything — not just houses and money, but also a sense of who I was. I had always been an actor, and a good one. When that part of you disappears, it feels like you’re falling.”

Despite the struggles, McDonough eventually found his way back into film. And even now, he says he has no regrets. To him, loyalty to his family and respect for his wife matter more than fame.
“I know who I am,” he said. “And I’m proud of that — even if it means I have to walk away from roles I’ve dreamed about.”
