29-year-old Sydney hairdresser Brittni Budhi got the surprise of her life when her daughter Teiana arrived three weeks early — not just because of the premature birth, but because the baby was born covered in dark hair.

The unusual look immediately earned Teiana a sweet nickname from her mom. “I knew babies could be born with some hair, but I didn’t expect this much. When she was born, I joked that she looked like a little monkey. To me it was adorable. Even if she’d been born with two heads, she still would’ve been the cutest baby in the world,” Brittni laughed.

Doctors later explained that Teiana’s appearance was due to lanugo — a fine layer of hair that sometimes remains on premature babies. Since she weighed just 2.2 kg at birth, the hair was more noticeable, but it naturally fell out as she grew.

Despite the harmless reason behind it, Brittni faced backlash online after sharing her story on TikTok. Many accused her of being cruel for calling her baby a monkey. But the young mom quickly shut down the criticism.

“I never meant anything bad. She was so sweet — it was my way of saying she was adorable. People hated on me for the nickname, but I just wanted to make the situation lighthearted. If others took it the wrong way, that’s on them,” she said.
Today, Teiana has grown into a healthy, happy little girl — and Brittni says she wouldn’t change a thing about her daughter’s unique start in life.
