What began as a simple search for food turned into one of the most astonishing archaeological discoveries in northern Spain. A hungry badger, digging for berries and worms, stumbled upon the largest collection of Roman coins ever found in the region. The treasure was located near the animal’s den in the municipality of Grado, Asturias.

Experts believe the badger uncovered the hoard during the harsh winter of Storm Filomena, when deep snow made food scarce. After clawing through the earth, the animal left several coins scattered outside its burrow — a clue that later caught the attention of archaeologists.

Soon after, two researchers accompanied by a local villager investigated the site and entered La Cuesta cave. There, they recovered a total of 209 late Roman coins dating between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD. The collection, minted mainly in Constantinople (modern Istanbul) and Thessaloniki, has been hailed as an “exceptional find.”
This discovery surpasses all previous coin hoards from the region. In fact, the last major find came in the 1930s, when 14 gold coins from the era of Emperor Constantine I were uncovered nearby.

The project, supported by the Asturian Department of Culture, is still in its first stages. Archaeologists plan to return to the site to search for more remains of the hoard. The coins themselves will soon be placed on public display at the Archaeological Museum of Asturias.

And yet, the mystery remains: if one hungry badger managed to expose such treasure, how much more still lies buried beneath the soil, waiting for chance — or claws — to bring it back into the light? What your thoughts?
