Three legs — but two wives and four children: the incredible fate of Francesco Lentini and the beauty he conquered

The story of Francesco Lentini is one of the most unusual cases in the history of immigrants who conquered America. Born in Sicily in 1889, the boy immediately became a local sensation: he was born with three legs, extra organs, and a “partially absorbed twin.” His parents, impoverished and burdened with twelve children, soon abandoned him, and the boy was sent to an orphanage.

However, it was there that Francesco realized that his uniqueness was not a sentence. He learned to run, skate, jump rope, and even kick a ball with his third leg. His agility and lively character amazed everyone who saw him for the first time.

When the family emigrated to the United States, fate gave Lentini a gift: circus performers noticed him on the steamboat and offered him a contract. His father agreed on the condition that his son would receive an education. That’s how Francesco ended up in the big arena. In America, he became a star of the biggest circuses — Barnum and Bailey, Ringling Brothers, Buffalo Bill’s show. He was loved for his wit, kindness, and ability to turn his disability into a show.

Lentini was no less successful in his personal life. He lived with his first wife, the beautiful Teresa Murray, for 25 years and raised four perfectly healthy children. After their divorce, he quickly found love with his second wife and remained with her until his death. In his later years, the artist settled in Gibraltar, Florida, a place where many circus performers lived side by side and no one was surprised by unusual appearances.

Francesco Lentini lived to be 77 years old — a long, full, and surprisingly happy life for a man who turned his congenital “flaw” into a path to fame, family, and respect.
