Sometimes a single small device can take us back to our childhood more powerfully than any photograph. For me, that symbol was an old metal generator that used to be installed on bicycles to power the front light. When I saw it again, I instantly remembered how every boy once dreamed of having such a thing on his “iron horse.”

There was one guy in our yard who was the first to install this generator on his bike. We crowded around his bike, holding our breath, waiting for him to ride by — and the headlight would flash brightly in the darkness. No batteries, no wires, just pedal and the magic comes to life. We watched it with envy and delight, as if it were a real technological miracle.
I remember how long I dreamed of buying such a generator for myself, so that I too could ride through the evening streets with a bright light and feel almost like an adult, almost like a motorcyclist. The light from the lamp seemed like a real gateway to a world of adventure.

Today, such generators have almost disappeared — they have been replaced by bright LED lamps and batteries. But for me, this little mechanism remains a piece of the past: the smell of freedom, the sound of wheels on asphalt, night rides, and childish pride in my “space-age” bicycle.
Do you remember these legendary dynamo generators?
