Most people rarely think about their pillow. It sits on the bed every night, quietly doing its job — until one morning you wake up with a stiff neck or aching shoulders and start wondering what went wrong.
Very often, the real problem is much simpler than expected. The pillow you sleep on may simply be worn out.

One of the most common warning signs appears right after you wake up. If neck, shoulder, or back pain starts happening more frequently, it may be a sign that your pillow is no longer providing proper support during the night.
Sleep expert Keren Yu explains that pillows naturally lose their structure over time. As they wear down, they stop supporting the neck and spine the way they should. When that support disappears, people can wake up feeling stiff, uncomfortable, or even with headaches.
Fortunately, there is a quick way to check whether your pillow has reached the end of its life.
The method takes less than a minute. Simply fold the pillow in half and hold it that way for about 30 seconds. Then release it and watch what happens next.
If the pillow quickly returns to its original shape, it is still in good condition. But if it stays flat or struggles to regain its form, it may already be too worn out to support your head properly.

Another sign is the way the pillow feels. If it no longer seems soft, fluffy, or comfortable like it used to, that is usually a sign that it has lost its internal structure. When that happens, finding a comfortable sleeping position can become much harder.
Many people are surprised to learn that pillows also have a lifespan. Just like other household items, they are designed to be replaced after a certain period.
Some pillows even include labels that indicate their recommended usage time. Checking those tags can help you understand when it might be time to bring home a new one.
