A bizarre kitchen gadget discovered at a local thrift store has left people online staring at photos and trying to figure out what it was actually made for.
The strange plastic object measured around 15 inches tall when closed, but once fully opened, the claw-like ends stretched nearly 11 inches apart. Its unusual shape immediately triggered wild guesses online.
Some people thought it looked like a torture device, while others compared it to oversized medical equipment or something from a science-fiction movie.
But the real answer turned out to be far less terrifying.
The object is actually an old kitchen tool designed for lifting large pieces of hot meat, especially turkey or roast dishes, out of ovens and deep pots without burning your hands.

Often called a roast lifter or turkey lifter, the gadget works like giant mechanical tongs that grip meat securely from both sides.
Some users specifically identified it as a vintage Hutzler roast lifter, a once-popular kitchen accessory that many younger people had never seen before.
The oversized claw design suddenly made much more sense once people realized the tool was meant to safely handle heavy, slippery food straight from boiling water or roasting pans.
Still, many admitted they never would have guessed the real purpose just by looking at it.
