Gabriel leaned closer.
“What did you say?”
Lucía closed her eyes.
“I never left you willingly.”
The words struck him like a punch.
She took a shaky breath.
“The day I disappeared… your mother came to the house.”
Gabriel froze.
“She showed me the photo of that man leaving our bedroom.”
“I told her it wasn’t what it looked like.”
“But she said you’d already believed the worst.”
Lucía reached into her apron and pulled out a worn envelope she had carried for months.
Inside were hospital reports, copies of threatening messages, and a signed agreement.
Gabriel’s hands trembled as he read.
Mercedes and Ximena had confronted Lucía after discovering she was pregnant.
They claimed the baby would ruin Gabriel’s reputation because doctors had once told him he might never have children.
Then came the ultimatum.
Leave quietly…
Or they would destroy Gabriel’s company with fabricated scandals and make sure he blamed her forever.
Lucía had chosen to disappear because she believed protecting him was the only way.
She worked under a false surname, taking cleaning jobs while hiding her pregnancy.
“I thought you’d be happier hating me,” she whispered.
Gabriel could barely breathe.
Everything he had believed for eight months had been carefully planned.
Just then, the hotel manager rushed over after hearing the commotion.
Seeing Gabriel, he apologized.
“Sir, if she’s caused any trouble, we’ll dismiss her immediately.”
Gabriel slowly turned.
“Dismiss her?”
The manager nodded nervously.
Gabriel removed his suit jacket and gently placed it over Lucía’s shoulders.
Then he faced every employee in the hallway.
“This woman isn’t being fired.”
“She’s my wife.”
“And she’s carrying my child.”
The hallway fell silent.
Gabriel took out his phone.
“Call my attorney.”
“Then call the police.”
“My mother and Ximena have a great deal to explain.”
Ximena’s confident smile vanished.
Mercedes arrived minutes later after hearing Gabriel had found Lucía.
She expected another misunderstanding.
Instead, she found her son standing beside his wife, holding her hand.
He looked directly at her.
“For eight months, I thought my wife had betrayed me.”
“The only people who betrayed me…”
He paused.
“…were standing beside me all along.”
As Gabriel helped Lucía walk toward the waiting car, he realized the greatest mistake of his life wasn’t losing the woman he loved.
It was believing the voices that wanted to separate them instead of trusting the woman who had never stopped loving him.
