Just days before her death at 80, Dolly Parton was still reaching out to the fans who had followed her for generations. The country legend appeared in a video on August 19, speaking warmly about music, dreams and gratitude. At the time, there was no indication that it would become one of her final public messages.
Although Dolly Parton could not travel to Nashville to accept the Poet’s Award in person, she still made sure to acknowledge the honor. The country icon appeared through a specially recorded video message, offering her appreciation to the Academy of Country Music for recognizing her work.
During the recording, Parton also looked back on the creative force that had shaped so much of her journey, explaining that writing songs had always held a particularly meaningful place in her life.
“Every dream I ever had, and all the dreams I managed to make come true in my life, started with a song,” Parton continued. She described writing songs as her therapy, release and joy, as well as a gift from God that allowed her to reach people through music and words.
By then, health issues had already forced the singer to change several plans. She missed the opening of the NightFlight Expedition attraction at Dollywood after experiencing dizziness and dehydration, explaining in another video that her doctor had told her not to travel. Parton had also previously spoken about kidney stones.
In May, she canceled her postponed Las Vegas residency because she needed additional time before returning to the stage. Some medication and treatment were making her dizzy, but she continued working behind the scenes on projects including the SongTeller Hotel, Life of Many Colors Museum and Dolly: A True Original Musical.

Parton’s final in-person public appearance came in June at the opening of a themed truck stop in Cornersville, Tennessee. After that, videos became an increasingly important way for her to remain connected with the public.
Nothing about her August 19 recording was framed as a farewell. Dolly was simply talking about the songs that had carried her through an extraordinary life. That is precisely what makes watching the footage now so emotional: fans had no idea they were seeing one of her final messages.
