This touching story happened in October 2016 in South Africa. Simona Johns saw a little squirrel in the courtyard of her neighbor’s house . The cub was no more than a week old. It cried and called for its mother, but it didn’t show up, it was probably frightened by people.
Simona decided to take the responsibility of taking care of the kittle squirrel . She named her new pet Digentji. She was nor sure if the squirrel would survive without its mother, but she did not want to go and leave it on the street. This is how this cute history started, which had been going on for almost 5 years.
Simona and her boyfriend didn’t know how to take care of a newborn squirrel and that’s why they turned to specialists for advice.
Simona created a comfortable nest for her lovely pet out of a shoe box, and she fed Digentji a few times during the night, so that it grew healthy. Simona even took the little creature to work sometimes.
“I never thought that it would be so hard to grow a squirrel,” mentions Simona.
The new family member became stronger in a short time, because it ate a lot and slept well. After some time it started to eat special food instead of milk. As it matured, it began to be more careful with people. The only person whom Digentji trusted unconditionally was its “adoptive mother.”
Simona understood that the moment was close when she would need to release Digentzhi, because it was and remained an animal of wild. Together with her boyfriend, Simona carried the cutie into the forest and let it go. Digentji orientated rapidly and climbed a tree.
“It was both very amazing and touching at the same time.”
They thought that this day the touching story finished, but that was not so. Digenji returned home at night as if nothing had happened. The same thing happened the next, and the third day… In the end, they began to leave an open window for it, so that Digentji was able go and return at any time it wanted.
A year later Digentji became pregnant, and on April 24, 2018, Simona became an unofficial “grandmother.”
The newborn was named Misty. Digentji allowed Simona to touch Misty and even hold it in her arms. This is a sign of the highest trust that animals can have.
“To be honest, this is the most incredible thing I’ve ever experienced,” says Simona.
