On June 20th, schoolboy Romeo Cox left Palermo with his father, Phil, and set off on a remarkable journey to London to visit his grandmother, Rosemary.
Their journey, spanning almost 3,000 kilometers, took them through Italy, Switzerland, and France.
The adventure was full of challenges and surprises. In Rome, they had to defend themselves against a group of stray dogs, and in the UK, they encountered and tamed a wild donkey.
They trekked through mountains, navigated dense forests, sailed along rivers in a boat, cycled, and even used the donkey to help them get around. According to Romeo, riding the donkey was so uncomfortable that he preferred to walk instead.
They spent their nights wherever they could—whether in churches, inns, campsites, or even on strangers’ floors. Along the way, many kind-hearted people offered them meals and a chance to rest.
After 93 days of walking, on September 21st, Romeo and his father finally arrived at Trafalgar Square.
“We stumbled a few times, even spent a night under a hornet’s nest, which wasn’t the best idea, but we never gave up,” Romeo recalled.
Following two weeks of quarantine, Romeo was finally able to reunite with his grandmother. After 93 days on the road, he could finally embrace her, and she could breathe easy knowing her grandson was safe.
Upon their return, their neighbors on Southborough Road greeted them with loud applause. Some even joined the father and son for the final stretch from Trafalgar Square to Rosemary’s house. The journey ended with a small celebration, complete with cake and champagne, where Romeo shared the thrilling details of his extraordinary adventure.
