Mice often try to get into houses when it gets cold outside. They are looking for food and a warm place to hide. If your house is not well protected, you might soon see a whole family of them. Even a cat might not be able to catch them all. What you need are smells that mice really hate. Here are some simple and cheap ways to keep them away.
What mice hate the most
There are many things you can use to scare mice away. Most of them are easy to find at a store or even in your garage. Here are some of the best options:
Burning rubber. Mice can’t stand the strong and nasty smell of burning rubber. To use this trick, burn a few pieces of old rubber, like a tire or shoe, in a metal bucket. After a short time, put out the fire and let the pieces cool down. Place them in spots where you see mice. This smell should keep them away for 3 to 5 months.
Burning wool or feathers. This smell is also terrible for mice. You can burn an old wool sock, a piece of felt, or even bird feathers. After burning them, spread the leftover pieces in areas where mice are seen. Another idea is to burn old wool clothes, mix the ashes with dry putty, and scatter this mix on their paths.
Birch tar. This is another powerful smell that mice hate. Soak some fabric with birch tar and place it in basements, attics, or sheds where mice might sneak in.
Turpentine. Pour some turpentine into small containers and place them on paths where mice move. For a stronger effect, you can mix turpentine with kerosene and spray this mix in basements or attics.
Vinegar. This is an old but effective method. Pour vinegar in places like the basement or attic, and within a few days, the mice should be gone. For an area of 80 square meters, you will need about 3 liters of vinegar.
Another useful mixture to try is a homemade spray:
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon of coffee grounds
A few garlic cloves
Peel of one lemon
A few cloves (the spice)
9% vinegar
Mice hate the smell of citrus fruits, and garlic and cloves are also natural repellents.
How to make it:
Cut the lemon peel and chop the garlic.
Put everything into a jar, add the coffee grounds and cloves, and pour in the vinegar.
Let it sit for 48 hours, shaking the jar from time to time.
Strain the mixture and spray it where you think mice might be hiding.
How to protect insulation from mice
Mice love to make nests in materials like mineral wool and polystyrene foam. Even protective nets don’t always work. A good trick is to use mothballs, which are toxic to mice. You can put them in insulation during construction or in finished rooms to keep mice out.
