Few people accustomed to city life and modern comforts would willingly trade it all for a remote village lifestyle. But one family has done just that—and they couldn’t be happier.

Bryce, 46, and Misty, 36, along with their daughters, have been living on a self-sustaining farm for over a decade. Both professional chefs, they made the conscious decision to leave urban life behind and build a home in harmony with nature, free from the influences of city living.

From the moment they met, Bryce and Misty often talked about moving to the countryside. Bryce had fond memories of visiting his grandmother’s house, while Misty, who had suffered from chronic migraines for years, felt significantly better when spending time away from the noise and pollution of the city. Instead of saving for years to buy a suburban house, they chose a different path—constructing their own home from natural materials in a secluded location.

Their house, built from a mix of sand, clay, and straw, has no traditional plumbing, but they rely on a well and rainwater collection systems for their water supply. Electricity is generated through solar panels, eliminating utility bills entirely. Remarkably, their entire home was built in just four months at a cost of under $10,000.

Their annual living expenses are only a few thousand dollars. The family grows their own fruits and vegetables, raises livestock and poultry, and supplements their diet with berries and mushrooms gathered from the nearby forest.

Their daughters, Sage (7) and Aurora (5), are homeschooled and have already learned a variety of essential skills.

The Eriens family does not own a car, instead relying on bicycles and horses for transportation. They have also built a small business selling organic produce and homemade meals to the local community. Bryce personally delivers the orders using a horse-drawn wagon.

Although they know that their lifestyle isn’t for everyone, they find immense satisfaction in their independence and the simple, self-sufficient life they have created.
