In the places where polar bears live, you won’t find forests or caves — only ice, snow, and wide-open tundra. That’s why we were amazed to learn that some of these bears have started living in empty buildings! Photographer Dmitry Kokh managed to capture rare and fascinating photos of polar bears making themselves at home in abandoned houses.
They look like cozy kittens in a village yard
One even seems to be inviting you in — just like a host at the door
The buildings the bears were found in used to be part of a weather station built back in the 1930s. It was left empty in 1992 and has stood untouched ever since.
The buildings are still in good condition, and the human smell has long faded away — which is probably why the bears feel comfortable settling there.
From the looks on their faces, they’re clearly doing just fine and enjoying the place
These buildings stand on Kolyuchin Island, along the coast of the Chukchi Sea, far away from any towns or people.
To take these up-close shots, Dmitry used drones equipped with quiet propellers so he wouldn’t disturb the animals.
In total, he counted around 20 polar bears exploring and resting around the weather station.
They really look like they belong there now — it’s their home
Originally, the photographer had planned to visit Wrangel Island, a place well known for its large bear population. But bad weather forced him to change his plans — and in the end, it led to something even more special. His incredible photos of the bears on Kolyuchin Island have already been picked up and shared by media outlets around the world.
