From the shore of the Loire River near the city of Nantes in France, there’s something very strange you might notice in the water: a tilted house sitting right in the river. To someone who doesn’t know the story, it might look like a disaster happened there.
This house appears to float just beside the town of Lavau-sur-Loire. But it’s not actually drifting—it’s firmly held in place by strong anchors on the riverbed. It didn’t end up in the water by accident.
The structure is part of an art project created by a local artist, Jean-Luc Courcoult. It was originally designed in 2007 as part of a campaign promoting shipwreck recovery services.
At first, the house was placed in a slightly different location. But after a period of high water levels and flooding, the current began to move it, so it was relocated closer to the riverbank. This time, it was fixed more securely with large underwater supports.
Over the years, this unique house has turned into a local landmark. Almost every tourist who comes to the area takes a photo of it—especially in the evening when one of the windows mysteriously lights up, adding to its charm and mystery.
