Tina Knowles recently shared a surprising detail about the early days of her daughter Beyoncé’s relationship with Jay-Z. According to Tina, Beyoncé wasn’t sure who to choose at first—she had two men showing interest in her at the same time.
Back when Beyoncé was filming the movie Austin Powers, she had a visitor on set who was a big fan of hers. At the same time, Jay-Z was calling her regularly. “They became friends by talking on the phone,” Tina explained. “They would share advice about the music industry. Over time, their friendship grew, and Beyoncé would say, ‘He’s so sweet.’”
Tina didn’t say who the other admirer was, but many believe it was Beyoncé’s high school boyfriend, Lyndall Locke, whom she dated from 1993 to 2001.
Beyoncé felt torn and turned to her mom for guidance. Tina’s advice was simple: “Pick the one who makes you feel the most excited and interested.”
Eventually, Beyoncé chose Jay-Z. The couple tied the knot in 2008 and now have three children: their daughter Blue Ivy, born in 2012, and twins Rumi and Sir, born in 2017.
