A letter dated July 31, 1981—just two days after her lavish royal wedding to Prince Charles—has recently been revealed. In it, Diana opens up about how she truly felt during what should have been the happiest days of her life.
The letter was addressed to Mark Simpson, a palace staff member who had been especially helpful to the couple during the wedding celebrations. At first, it reads like a formal thank-you note. But very quickly, it becomes something far more personal.
“Dear Mark, I just wanted to thank you so very much for being so kind and patient ever since I arrived at Buckingham Palace,” Diana begins politely.
But then she adds, “Your presence really brightened my stay, as it was so dreadfully lonely—and we did laugh a lot! I can’t thank you enough for that.”
From her words, it’s clear that Diana was struggling from the very start. The magical time that most brides dream about—those first days after the wedding—was already overshadowed by feelings of deep isolation.
