At 76, Meryl Streep is officially back as the iconic Miranda Priestly — but filming the highly anticipated Devil Wears Prada sequel hasn’t been entirely smooth.

The Oscar-winning actress took a tumble on set during a scene recreating one of fashion’s biggest nights: the Met Gala. The production team had transformed a New York City location to mimic the famous Costume Institute event, complete with a dramatic blue carpet draped across a grand staircase.

Streep first tested the steps in safer wedge heels — wearing a white blouse with a bold checkered pattern, loose-fitting black trousers, and an oversized beige trench coat. After confirming the stairs were secure, she changed into towering red patent leather platform heels for the actual take.

Alongside co-stars Stanley Tucci and Simone Ashley, Streep rehearsed the scene — which called for her to ascend the stairs in full glam as the powerful editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly. For the scene, she wore a dramatic scarlet satin gown with a voluminous skirt and sweeping train. Her hair was elegantly styled, and her makeup polished, complete with statement earrings for the final touch.

As the cameras rolled, Streep became entangled in the folds of her dress and lost her footing. The tumble, while dramatic, caused no injuries. Streep reportedly laughed off the mishap, and Stanley Tucci quickly stepped in, offering his arm to help her up. After a brief pause, filming resumed.

Simone Ashley — best known for her role in Bridgerton — followed up the stairs in a striking black gown with a high, sheer neckline, making her official debut as a cast member in the sequel.

Interestingly, the infamous Met Gala stairs have caused real-life stumbles before — including Gigi Hadid in 2021 and Janelle Monáe in 2024, according to Daily Mail.

The long-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is slated for release in 2026, exactly 20 years after the original. Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway are also reprising their roles, but the fashion world they return to has changed dramatically.

The sequel’s plot centers around a modern media war: Miranda is nearing retirement and fighting to keep Runway alive in the digital age, while her former assistant Emily Charlton — now a powerful rival — threatens her position. With print advertising in decline and generational power shifts at play, the battle promises to be fiercer than ever.
