Some see a deformity — nature sees a unique creation. Myrtle Corbin, born in 1868 in Tennessee, had a rare condition called dipygus, which gave her two pelvises and an extra pair of legs. Despite her unusual anatomy, she managed to build a life that was both successful and fulfilling.

At 13, Myrtle stepped into the world of traveling shows, introduced as “The Four-Legged Girl from Texas.” Her rare appearance drew huge crowds and made her a star. The attention was so great that other performers staged fake acts just to imitate her and share in her fame.

By 19, she had left the stage to marry James Clinton Bicknell. Reports claimed that along with her extra legs, she also had two sets of reproductive organs. In time, she became a mother to five healthy children, proving that her condition did not stop her from living a family life.

Away from the spotlight, Myrtle was known as intelligent, graceful, and musically talented. She kept her home running smoothly and lived quietly with her loved ones, far from the noise of the show world.

Myrtle died in 1928, just six days before her 60th birthday, from a skin infection. Fearing her body might be stolen by those who wanted to profit from her remains, her family poured concrete over her coffin and guarded it until it was secure.

Would you want an extra limb? And should people with rare physical conditions take an active part in public life?
