“Our friends joked it was a ‘depression apartment’!” — The couple renovated their ‘gloomy’ home, and the final result shocked everyone

When our friends first visited our new apartment, they jokingly called it “too depressing.” According to them, there was too much gray, too much darkness, too much coolness. But I just smiled — for my husband and me, this interior isn’t about sadness, but about calm, harmony, and style.

We never dreamed of floral wallpaper or rooms bathed in bright colors. Everyone has their own idea of beauty and comfort, and for us the ideal home is a place where the eyes can rest and the breath becomes lighter.

We had received the apartment recently, and it required a full renovation. Elderly people had lived here before us, and they could no longer maintain the space. So nothing of the old interior remained — we decided to start everything from scratch and tailor it entirely “for ourselves.”

Now, after the renovation, the hallway is one of the most pleasant places in the home. We painted almost all the walls in a deep, dense shade of dark gray.

Yes, such a choice isn’t for everyone, but gray can be surprisingly noble and rich when presented correctly. And it seems we succeeded.

We enhanced the atmosphere with large abstract paintings — black strokes with gold accents look incredibly striking. The floor is covered with cool gray laminate that perfectly supports the overall color tone. We kept the classic white doors between rooms, and in the kitchen we removed the door completely, creating an open passage.

The kitchen interior turned out minimalist and airy. Smooth snow-white cabinets without handles look simple — but that simplicity is exactly where their elegance lies. Nothing extra — just clean lines and comfortable use.

In the living room, we implemented an unusual layout: a sofa and a bed placed next to each other, creating a unified relaxation module. Despite the unconventional solution, both pieces look cohesive and stylish thanks to the matching materials. The TV is placed opposite the sofa, and beside the bed is my long-awaited project — a neat vanity table with a mirror and lighting, perfect for storing cosmetics and accessories.

The bathroom continues the home’s overall concept — large concrete tiles, minimal details, a light industrial aesthetic. Refined minimalism feels much closer to us than decorative elements like seashells and dolphins.

For us, home is not about bright colors or decorative coziness. It’s about balanced forms, a calm atmosphere, and understated elegance.

And how do you feel about the color gray? Does it evoke sadness for you… or style?
