I came across this solid maple dresser on my local Facebook Marketplace, and knowing how well similar pieces clean up, I immediately saw its potential. At first glance, one of the doors was hanging crooked, but it turned out to be a simple fix—just a couple of missing screws.
Since the dresser was solid maple, I started sanding with my orbital sander, working through a progression of grits: 80, 120, 220, and finishing at 320. The top had the most damage, with scratches and scuffs from years of use, but after sanding it down, the natural beauty of the maple began to shine through.

I also sanded the doors, taking care to smooth every surface evenly. Once the entire dresser was fully prepped, I began designing the final look. I drew up some sketches and decided on a combination of painted and natural wood surfaces for a modern yet timeless aesthetic.

For the painted areas, I used Valspar furniture and cabinet paint over a Zinsser primer, applying each coat carefully with a foam roller. To achieve an ultra-smooth finish, I lightly sanded between coats using very high-grit sandpaper, 500 or above, which made a huge difference in the final look.

All the elements slowly came together. I chose to leave the top, sides, and doors in their natural wood state, applying several coats of clear polyurethane to protect and enhance the grain. The contrast between the painted body and the natural wood surfaces created a modern, elegant effect that still highlighted the original craftsmanship of the dresser.

Finally, the piece was ready for photos. Seeing the transformation from worn and neglected to sleek and functional was incredibly satisfying. The dresser now has a fresh, polished look while preserving the character and warmth of the original maple.

What made this project especially rewarding was knowing where it would go next. The dresser found a new home in a nursery, giving it a second life and ensuring it will be used and loved for many more years. It’s a perfect example of how a little care, vision, and effort can breathe new life into a forgotten piece of furniture.
Whether it’s the smooth finish, the restored natural wood, or the painted details, every part of the dresser now tells a story of renewal and timeless beauty, proving that even worn-out furniture can become the centerpiece of a room when handled with care.
