The house was still.

Grabbed something with his mouth.
A pillow.
Soft.

He carried it back.
Placed it—
right below the edge.
Perfect.
Then stepped back.
Waited.
Seconds passed.
The baby rolled again.
Too far now.
The body shifted.
Weight moved.

the fall.
Short.
Fast.
Silent.
But not dangerous.
The baby landed—
on the pillow.
Soft.
Safe.
No cry.
No shock.
Just surprise.
The dog stepped closer.
Looked down.
Still.
Calm.
The mother didn’t wake.

Didn’t know.
The dog sat.
Right beside the bed.
Watching.
Guarding.
Like nothing happened.
