At 79, Susan Sarandon proved she can still command a red carpet without an extravagant gown or acres of exposed skin. Surrounded by much younger stars, the Hollywood veteran drew attention with a look that was simple at first glance but packed with attitude.
Sarandon appeared for the world premiere of her new film “The Echo Chamber,” starring alongside Alicia Vikander and Italian actor Luca Marinelli. Vikander, 37, arrived with husband Michael Fassbender in a turquoise ruffled gown with a dramatic thigh-high slit, while Sarandon chose a completely different approach.
The actress, who turns 80 on October 4, wore a long black off-the-shoulder dress. Fitted across the upper body, it became looser from the hips and fell to the floor in soft folds.
Her accessories made the understated outfit impossible to miss. Sarandon wore her dark shoulder-length hair loose, added bright red lipstick and finished the look with a chunky chain necklace. Dark sunglasses gave her appearance an even cooler edge as she stopped to sign autographs for waiting fans.
One tiny detail carried a serious message. Known for her political activism, Sarandon wore an Artists4Ceasefire pin featuring a dove with a flower in its beak. The organization campaigns for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Sarandon’s Hollywood career stretches back more than five decades. Her breakthrough came with 1975’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” alongside the recently deceased Tim Curry. She later became internationally famous with Geena Davis in 1991’s “Thelma & Louise” and won the 1996 Best Actress Oscar for “Dead Man Walking.”
Just weeks before her 80th birthday, Sarandon once again showed that age hasn’t dimmed her ability to grab attention. She kept the outfit uncomplicated — and still managed to stand out.
