Halle Berry is approaching her 60th birthday with a mindset that looks very different from the one Hollywood often expects from women getting older. After decades of being regarded as one of cinema’s biggest sex symbols, the 59-year-old actress says age has brought her something far more valuable than chasing youth: freedom.
For Berry, confidence hasn’t faded with the years — it has grown stronger. “I feel like with age, confidence just grows. It grows and grows. You become more and more yourself,” she explained. Instead of worrying about meeting other people’s expectations, she now sees this stage as potentially one of the best chapters of a woman’s life.
That is exactly what she tells other women. “This is going to be your best chapter. This is your ‘I don’t give a damn what anybody thinks’ chapter,” Berry declared. And judging by her own approach to life at 59, she isn’t simply giving advice she doesn’t follow herself.
Berry says she has never been particularly interested in copying other women or measuring herself against them. “I think I’ve always been able to march to my own drum. I’ve never been a follower. I’ve never tried to keep up with anybody. I realized I’ve always been running my own race,” she said.
Her boundaries with family have changed as well. Berry no longer feels obligated to agree to everything simply because someone close to her expects it. “I don’t have guilt around that anymore. I do it very freely, and I tell my family all the time, ‘No, I’m not going to do that. Why don’t you do that yourself?’”
Learning to say no, in Berry’s eyes, isn’t selfish. She sees it as another part of respecting herself. “You learn to say no without guilt. You can say no with love because you’re choosing to love yourself. And that’s what I’ve really learned to live with,” the actress explained.
Her fiancé, musician Van Hunt, has also become an important part of this new chapter. Berry says having a partner who accepts and supports her has made embracing herself even easier. “Now that I have my man in my life who supports me too, self-love has probably been the greatest gift that’s come into my life,” she said.
