Researchers Have Found Out What Kind of Birds Have Been Tamed By People Long Before Chickens

Many and many years before the chicks and ducks, people tamed another bird in the ancient times.  A recent analysis of the remains of eggshells revealed that eighteen thousand years ago, the inhabitants of New Guinea acclimatized the cassowary, which is considered one of the most dangerous fowls nowadays.

Scientists at Pennsylvania State University analyzed the remains of eggshells which were found in parts of New Guinea and came to unexpected conclusions.  They belonged to cassowaries – fowls that are one of the most dangerous ones on the Earth today.  It turned out that even eighteen many years ago people acclimatized  cassowaries and this happened a long time ago before chickens.

“The existence of the tropical rainforests on the island eighteen thousand  years ago provide the earliest known evidence of human reproduction. Cassowaries were acclimatized thousands of years before the acclimatization  of a chicken. And this is not just a  small bird – it is  a huge, vicious flightless bird that can easily take a life, ” said Professor Christina Douglas from Pennsylvania State University.

Cassowaries are flightless fowls native to New Guinea and Australia.  Outwardly cassowaries look like emus, but some people compare them to dinosaurs.  They reach 1.8 meters in height and up to 60 kilograms in weight.  According to the San Diego Zoo, this is the most menacing bird in the world – it has huge claws, powerful legs and a beak.  The meat of these flows is still eaten in some places of New Guinea – it is considered a delicacy there.
